We also just found the pollinator.org site is asking for help. Look at this page, and sign the petition to keep highway (roadside) vegetation intact. This will help not only the pollinators, but other forms of wildlife, too.

Anne Marie Schoonhoven nominated Emily for a Young Philanthropist Award, and Emily was selected. We are so proud and grateful. The ceremony will take place November 18th. We will post more then.

More thanks for permission to use the letter addressed to Administrator Jackson. PANNA recently allowed Emily to mail beekeeping clubs the letter asking for systemic pesticides to be reconsidered. This came as a result of watching the Dan Rather special posted last month. Thank you PANNA, and thank you to the beekeeping clubs who are participating.

Rain, Rain Go Away

This has been a horrible month for the bees. Tons of rain, a hurricane, and lots of washed-out flowers.

We have our girls up on a roof, and the new queen and hive have endured all of the weather mishaps.

It is fun to watch them every day, and let’s just say, they are fierce. Tons of potential robbers have been dragged away every day.

Requeening!

We don’t usually post about beekeeping techniques, but this time it’s so new and exciting, we have to try.

Jim Wood has convinced us to requeen in the late summer. Build up a bunch of fresh, new brood with a queen that hasn’t been exposed to pesticides, and see what happens.

So we are doing it.

Last night we took some frames from the Boy Scout Troop 72 hive, and started the process.

(By the way, that queen is the nicest girl in the world. I am hoping her gene pool survives many generations.)

After numerous phone calls to Jim, I think we’re on track.

We’ll keep progress notes!

Studying in the Summer

There was no post for July, but there was a lot of studying!

Jim Wood recommended Queen Rearing Essentials (Larry Connor) and we’ve been getting ready to requeen.

We have also been feeding our bees a lot. There has been a terrible dearth, and it has everyone feeding.

Fingers crossed, we can keep the bees going through so they are strong enough for winter.

A Surprise Swarm and a New Beekeeper

Marcel brought us another swarm, bless him. Now we have two, and we hope to keep them strong.

Additionally, Jim Wood (a man with A LOT of knowledge and a lot of bees) sold us a nuc last week.

This nuc found a home with Ethan’s father, who, as mentioned in this blog previously, was a beekeeper many years ago.

So, that brings Bee Happy Honey up to 4 new beekeepers this year.

Hooray!

Also, we went to see Queen of the Sun. Super movie. Check it out.

A few weeks ago Bee Happy Honey helped John Cardillo of Boy Scout Troop 72 put his bee hive in. He was great with the bees and the location seems wonderful. Three orchards nearby, and lots of pollen.

We are going to be working with him to teach him as much as we know. Hopefully, we can all learn more.

We are trying to get more hives going so we can discover and explore ways to save the bees.

John will be teaching the scouts about the importance of honey bees once he makes it through his first winter

We are happy to support him as mentors.

The Girls Get New Homes

Last weekend we delivered nucs. One went to Ethan, one to John and the Marlboro Boy Scouts, and the third went to Bob and Darcy.

I have to say, Bob and Darcy’s hive was adorable, and the bees thought it quite posh…

Ron Papa brought the nucs up from Georgia, and Bee Happy Honey purchased them with the hives for the new beekeepers.

They all did great unloading the girls, and I’m hoping for the best.

Nice work!

Marcel brought me a swarm, so my yard is happy again…bless him.
