So, this is the man.
The man, the myth, the legend.
Marcel is working with us on ideas for the PowerPoint, because he LOVES to talk about honeybees. Actually, he never shuts up!
He also wants to start his own t-shirt campaign, with his own special message. When he gets that going, we’ll post it.
Until then, during these cold, dark days of winter, we will brainstorm our educational curriculum.

We’ve winterized our hive, and just checked in with some of the locals. Our newest beekeeper Francis has a healthy, strong bunch of gals. Ed Weber lost a few hives, which made me sad…and I guess we’re in for a long winter.
The SouthEastern group had an excellent meeting last month, with an apitherapy specialistwho was fascinating.
Marcel continues to amaze us, and has designed his own t-shirt for honeybee awareness. He just got back from an international conference, and he is great!
I’m hoping our slide show can be used by Marcel. He has a great way with children.
Just started listing on e-bay…that should increase our sales and then our projects can continue. Finally got in touch with one of our past scholarship winners, Deborah Greig. She’s part of Just Food, in Brooklyn, NY and she is so grateful to have taken the course with HoneyBeeLives.org. We are happy we could help!
Still waiting for a picture…

If you are a teacher of grades 1, 2 or 3 you really should check out the curriculum posted for honeybees on the website of the Canadian Honey Council.

Canadian Honey Council - Honeybee Curriculum
We came across it in our slide show creation, and it is fantastic. It teaches first-grade students about honeybees and flowers (pollination). For second-graders, honeybee communication is studied. Third-grade students get a look at what goes on inside a hive…a honeybee’s life cycle.
They have given us permission to link to them…so, here you go! Canadian Honey Council – Curriculum for Grades 1-3

It’s been a busy summer, but the latest news is that the heavy rains this year may hurt the bees. Hmmm. I’m going to have to ask Ron Papa more about that.
See the article in the Times Herald Record Here: Rainfall could bring big bee die-off

Francis' nuc gets moved to a hive body!
We are currently working with some of the beekeepers to compile pictures of honeybees at work.
We will put together a slide show complete with a study guide and offer an educational assembly for elementary school children.
Every year the students study insects. With our assembly we hope to create an awareness of how important honeybees are to human existence.
The sooner a child knows, the sooner a positive change can take place.
Pictures are welcome! Please send any you would like to share. They must be free of copyright restrictions.
Thanks!

Since we’ve been a company for a year, and blogging only for 1 week, it’s time to catch up.
Pat Dolan was our first beneficiary. We gave him an observation hive to help support his work teaching people about pollinators.

Pat's Farm
Pat got started with bees because of Ed Weber. Just like us!
He had honey bees living in an old barn. They are still there, but now he also has hives.
His farm is kid-friendly, and I recommend a visit. You can teach your children about butterflies and honey bees as pollinators.
Education is the first step in helping save the bees. The ignorance abounds!
Thanks, Pat for doing your part.

Well, this week has been busy. The girls are swarming and all the beekeepers are running about.
Ed Weber and I had an interesting time at the Ship Lantern Inn (Milton). Seems as though a swarm (probably living in a tree – or maybe from a nearby orchard) alarmed the owners, who were then going to call pest control.
Luckily, I’m friends with Francis (the awesome chef at the Ship) and he called and asked us to take the girls home.
To his home.
We now welcome Francis as the newest beekeeper in Orange County, and hope he loves his bees as much as we do.
Thanks for dinner, too!
